Acknowledgments:
Well, to
say this is my first short story book would be totally untrue. But, The
characters in this story are completely fictional revolves between some real
incidents. This is my small effort to deliver a strong message to society, how
our Frontline workers struggled to protect our lives and I want to abolish the
false religious belief in people mainly issued in this pandemic. This book is
dedicated to doctors, policemen, scavengers, and every frontline worker
coalition for their hard work and service to our society.
Sarvani Addanki - mentor, dear sister, friend, and was the first reader of the draft. She helped me a lot, and she adjusted mistakes with necessary corrections and gave a genuine review, that makes me more confident.
Rajkumar Vuppala, a brilliant design artist,
made my book cover, and he crafted the artwork according to my desire, and he
patiently listened to me and produced perfect artwork to my book cover and
animation arts to every chapter.
MSD Prasad and
Siva Sesha Sai - who are first listeners of my story and encouraged me to put it on
the paper, if these stupids hadn’t encouraged and harassed me all the way, I
would have given this up.

CHAPTER-1
NEED SOME REST
Counting on the days…
People are hoping that tomorrow a miracle may happen. I’m so
tired,
working the last 10 days restlessly
and
just reached my home from
the hospital; makes me feel like heaven after suffering death. I used to take intervals every
three
days and this time Teena is with me, holding a small
doll, looking innocently towards me. I don’t know
how long this 7-year girl will be going to suffer. I am
feeling exhausted, and my condition is going to be worse, if I don’t have a
strong coffee…
I rushed
into the kitchen and prepared a strong coffee, then relaxing on the sofa after
a steam bath. Teena is sitting on the chair
and leaned her head on the table. I know she is feeling very misery and dull,
didn't even talk to me a single word in the car, departure from hospital to
home. I went near her…
“Teena… Teeenaaa…,” I called her
in a soft tone, “What are you thinking about? my child!”
She didn’t answer my question.
“Do you want me to bring something to eat?” I asked her.
She simply nods her head and leaned on the table.
I know how hard she feels and I don’t know how to explain the situation to this
small child and how far she will be able to understand and defy her problem.
When the
first time, I met her, she is so active and cheerful, always chuckles for her
innocent understandings, and is so joyful with a bright smile in her face. But
all disappeared in the last four days. So, I decided to bring her back what she
was before, and I manage to behave as, she will be completely comfortable with
my company.
I took the
doll of her and asked, “Hi… what is your name?”
“Maybe Your name is Barbie or Elsa, The Frozen kingdom Queen!” I told in
cheerful.
“No, she is MISS.RIKA,” replied by Teena in a low voice.
“Oh! Really! You are Miss RIKA,” I exclaimed, looking towards the doll.
“So, Hi RIKAA... Are you Teena’s
friend?”
“Yes, she is my friend, my only friend since when I was five years old,” said
Teena, leaning her head down on the table.
“Miss.Rika will you be my friend?”
I pleaded the doll.
Teena raises her head and looked up, then I nodded the head of the doll secretly
and pretended like the doll is answering
to my question.
Teena gave a strange smile at me.
“Miss Rika! Why is Teena so dull today?” I asked, looking towards the doll.
“Because she is so hungry today,
and she wants to eat ice cream, chocolate, biscuits, and sandwiches…” I
ventilated my peach voice in a keen and pretended as the doll is speaking.
“Teena, you want all those things?” I asked her.
“No..., No, she is lying, I want only ice cream and I don’t want chocolates and
biscuits!” she answered anxiously.
“SO! Miss
RIKA…
Why are you telling lies?” I shouted at the doll.”
“I want those…, I planned that if
you
bring, I will eat everything
without
giving to her,” again I pretended
like a
doll’s voice.
“MISS.RIKA... You are bad… Very
bad,”
I shouted.
“She is a bad girl… she wants my
ice cream,” told Tenna in childish.
“YES, Teena...! She wants to eat your ice cream,” I shouted, "Come on… We
both will eat ice cream without giving a spoon to MISS. RIKA.”
Teena nodded her head furiously with eagerness.
“So! Let's be friends TEENA?” I asked her.
“YES… YES… We are friends now. We are friends for two ice creams for me,” she yelled.
I laughed at her…
”Yes, yes…only for two?”, and I laughed again…
We went to the kitchen, there is
a large bucket of ice cream in the freezer. So, I served two scoops for each of
us. Teena's face is glowing brightly after seeing the tempting ice cream served in a glass bowl.
“It’s my favorite ice cream… Butterscotch!” Teena exclaimed in joy, “How do you know my
favorite one?”
“Yes, I know it sweetie… Go on, eat
it fast, or else it will meltdown,” I responded.
“Thank you so much bubblegum auntie, love you,” Teena extolled me, and she kissed
on my cheek.
“Bubblegum aunty… Ha-ha, why do you call me like that sweetie?” I laughed for
her gag line.
“Because it is your name… Bubblegum!”
she answered innocently.
“Who told you my name was bubblegum?” I asked Teena in laughter.
“I heard when my papa was saying to me in the phone call," She commenced in
a low voice, “He also told me that I needed to stay quiet with you and not to
bother you for any aspect and behave like a good girl. I’m sorry if I had
bothered you, auntie. I don’t ask the ice cream anymore…”
Her words are quite morally
reprehensible, I don’t know why God examines these innocent kids, how these
little hearts can tolerate these kinds of struggles.,
“OH! Sweetie, it’s not bubblegum…Ha-ha, its Begum, My name is Razia Mumtaz Begum,”
I recounted my name to her.
“Raaziaa
Mamuthajz Bagam,” Teena cutely pronounced my name.
“Haha… Don’t get struggle my sweetie, you can call me RAZIA,” I insisted in a
comical tone, “Come on, let's go and I will cook some food for us, you need to
change your clothes.”
CHAPTER-2
THIS VIRUS IS DANGEROUS
A million hearts are weeping, many souls are
resting peacefully after excruciation, some lives are ending at the beginning,
some lives are ruined with a great struggle that they can’t tolerate in their
life terminus and some of them destroyed by self-annihilation, feeling
themselves like a weed plant in the wheat crops, to prevent spreading socially. They remain like social heroes. But No history
memorizes their great sacrifices. During this war, every human playing a vital
role, this pandemic virus is stronger than the previous one. It was born in the
year 1930, Day by day it is transforming its structure to survive immortally,
It developed its stages in the last 90 years and finally showing its barbarity,
ghastliness, and horrendous. The human respiratory system is its residence. It stays
in you without your permission, even without any intimation of its presence, It
stays quiet and occupy your respiratory system and gets complete control, then
expands its family in you and survives until you die or you kill it by staying strong.
Every day I live among this virus,
I’m like a predator to them. If I not cautious for a second, I will be beautiful
prey to them. Inside so timid, but in external showing some bravery and staying
alert, and taking some measures. Because there are hundreds of COVID-19 patients
around me, Yes….! I’m a doctor, “Dr. Razia Begum(Pulmonologist)” working in the
Life-star Hospital. I have 13 years of experience in my career and never faced this
dangerous situation. Every day new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported and
many of them were admitted to our hospitals who are affected by the Corona
Virus. As time goes on, the condition is beyond control. I’m very tensed up and
so anxious to handle this situation. But, externally, feigning like everything would
be normal and giving hope to the patients who believe that we are going to save
their lives.
It’s
been 27 days till now. I am working for both day and night shifts. Treating patients
and caring for them every second is my major work here. One day, I’m about to
leave the hospital, and my working shift time is over. It's around 8:45 p.m. I’m
undressing my apron and getting ready to depart from the hospital. Suddenly,
the hospital warden rushed into my cabin…
Again, I
dressed up and wearing my mask, In meanwhile warden came with patient details
and reports and I told him to keep it on my table. I’m checking into patient
details. His name is “Mr.NARASIMHA” Former Military officer who tested positive
in Corona Virus check-up. I went upstairs, visited him to check his condition. He
is alright now. But, he needs to suffer for a particular period, and his
breathing condition is at a normal rate with proper inhalation and exhalation. If
he maintains this, he will surely survive.
“So! Officer,
No need to worry, You are alright and need to stay in observation for some days,”
I said, “You need some rest, we are there to take care of you."
“I’m worried
about my daughter,” he grumbled, “She is in the ground floor, results negative
in Corona Virus check-up, she used to live with her aunt when I was in the border.
As soon as her aunt came to know that I’m infected with Corona Virus, she abandoned
us and was not allowing my daughter to stay in her home. I have no one to ask for
help and I don’t know how long it takes to recover myself. If I’m not, who will
take care of her? I protected many of your lives in fighting with the enemies in
the border... MANY LIVES...! But now, no one is willing to take care of my
daughter, no one is coming forward to save one life.”
“OFFICER!
Please don’t worry…, I will take care of her, I will take her to my home, I
will feed, I will dress her up every day, I will look after her if you don’t
have any objection,” I responded after hearing his misery and assured him not
to distress about his daughter, “You will be fine and stay strong at least for your daughter's sake, you need to
reclaim your good health back and your strong willing makes you recover fast.”
“Thank
you so much dear, GOD BLESS YOU! Before you leave, Once I need to talk to my
daughter, she is sitting on the ground floor with regular common patients,
please feed your number in my phone, when you go to her, I will call you,” he groaned
with little happiness.
I went to
the ground floor for Teena. I saw her sitting sadly, putting her both hands
under her chin and thinking about her father, wearing a small mask to her mouth
and when she came to know my presence, she started looking innocently towards
me and we look at each other for a while and I went near her…
“Come with
me.,
I will take you to
your
father,” I answered and took her to my cabin and gave
her some water, and she sat on my chair and playing with the things on my table
for a while. Then, I dialed her father and gave her the phone to talk with her father.
“HELLO! PAPA…
It’s me Teena.., Where are you?... I need to see you,” she is questioning her father
unceasingly.
“Teena, My
dear… listen to me. I got a little fever, need to take rest for a few days. So,
no need to worry NANA!
You go with
begum aunty and stay with her for some days. Ok...Na! I will come to you when
completely recovered. Until then, you stay in the begum aunt's house and listen
to her, Don’t trouble her in any aspect and behave like a good girl NANA…, PAPA
LOVES YOU… ”
“Don’t
worry, Papa, take care of yourself, I won’t trouble aunty, you know I’m a good
girl. TEENA LOVES PAPA.., BYE.”
As soon as the call ended we departed from the hospital and I had driven to the
home…,
CHAPTER-3
THE STORY OF A VIRUS
We are in the same state of wretchedness,
with some maturity and understanding ability, I can wield this state of affairs
professionally. But, I’m feeling the same as how Teena feeling about her father.
Physically am too weak now because this is the month of Ramzan. I am fasting
from dawn until dusk abstaining from drinking and eating. Praying to the Lord to
save the people's lives and hopes, protect them from this disaster and bring peace
to this world.
We
reached home at midnight around 12 o'clock; Teena fell asleep after eating ice-cream.
I had a nap for just 3 hours and woke by the snooze on my alarm around 4 a.m.
to start my predawn meal called suhoor. I prepared fresh roti and paneer
fritters for both of us and started my day by offering a prayer before having the
meal and read some phases from our sacred book Quran. This is my daily routine
in the month of Ramzan and now my body needs some rest because of heavy work
and extra shifts at the hospital.
I dozed for a while on the sofa in the
living room and woke suddenly for little disturbance,
When
I opened my eyes, saw Teena in front of me holding her little doll. I yawned and went to her…
She brushed
her teeth and had her cereals, and we both watched Television for some time. It's
been afternoon, I’m going to prepare some food for her.
Once
upon a time, there is a kingdom called Indira Rajyam ruled by a king called Nara
Hara Mohi. Under his ruling, everyone is happy and blissful with all health and
wealth. The king always protects his people from enemies and treated them like
his own children. People also liked his ruling very much. One fine day, a very horrifying
news turmoil him very much. The big monster, a cruel devil named “Kuruna” ready
to onset against his kingdom. Kuruna already charged against many kingdoms and
no king able to handle its effect, It invades every kingdom and suffering lots
of people and leading some of them to death. He is terrified for this
unexpected incursion and got tensed by seeing his friendly kingdoms fallen and
defeated by battling with Kuruna. Now it is charging towards his kingdom. He started
thinking about other alternatives to defeat the Kuruna, but his every effort of
stopping Kuruna was failed. It has already entered into his kingdom, People started
suffering and he found no other way to stop it and he started praying to Lord
Shiva. He meditated his name in penance and prayed to protect his people and
his kingdom from Kuruna. Days are passing by, he is in deep atonement with Lord
Shiva.
… … …
Finally,
One-day Lord Shiva impressed for his penance and appeared in his conscience, instructed
him how to fight against Kuruna. He says that it only happens with people’s willingness
on my words. Remember, only three instructions to defeat Kuruna that everyone
in your kingdom must follow:
King
Nara Hara Mohi thanked Lord Shiva and started a campaign to follow the strict rules
to defeat the Kuruna. Everyone in his kingdom started following Lord Shiva’s crusades
strictly, maintaining social distance and all together defeated the cruel
monster Kuruna. Everyone praised king Nara Hara Mohi for protecting their lives
from this disaster. People in the kingdom offered some amount from their daily wages
and built a temple for Lord Shiva to thank him and worshiping him for protecting
their lives… …
I know, I can’t hide the truth so long, one day or another she needs to know. So, I convinced myself to tell the truth to her.
“YES, sweetie... he infected with the Corona Virus,” I concerned, “He will surely defeat Corona Virus in him and I will help for that. ”
“Come, let us play a game in play
station,” I invited her to join with me, “which game you want to play?”
“BARBIE or DOREMON!” she reacted
with joy.
The whole day we enjoy playing and watching cartoons and it's time to end my fasting with Iftar (meal to break the fasting) and I fell asleep. Suddenly I got an emergency phone call from the hospital, and I answered it.
“Madam! Patient NO:106 is in serious condition now,” Shouted by Hospital warden in panic. That phone call has changed everything in my life, it pulled me into an ocean of misery and I lost my heartbeat for a second. Teena is sleeping, I don't want to disturb her and took the car keys, and drive to the hospital hurriedly.
CHAPTER-4
MISERABLE DAY IN MY LIFE
I reached the hospital as quickly
as possible and was so tense, my hands were shivering and I couldn’t take the
breath properly until his condition is set to normal. I rushed into the room:
106 to check his condition. As soon as I entered the room, I saw three nurses
monitoring his condition and trying to stable his situation.
“Where are the other doctors?” I
hollered, “What are they doing?”
“Madam, it’s
2 a.m. and all are in out of their shifts,” warden screamed, “chief warden
wants to inform the situation of him to you, then I called you immediately. We
already informed Dr. Dev and Dr.Niharika. But, they take nearly two hours to
reach here, and outside it is about to storm heavily.”
“Please everyone stay outside
for a while…” I maundered, “Inform me when the doctors arrived.”
I sat
beside his bed and watching him and hold his hand tightly, I never saw him like
this before, I was frightened and praying hard for him that he can see the next
sunrise. He can sense my presence in the room, slowly opened his eyes and I’m
there in front of him.
“Now my
heart settled after seeing you, My child!” he mumbled, “Sorry for what I did,
You want to be a doctor and I haven’t encouraged and supported you in my whole
life. But now you are, all with your hard work and dedication. You are serving
many patients, saving many lives, and only raising hope for everyone. I’m so
proud of you..., SO PROUD and please excuse me for what I did to you. If you
don’t, there will be no place for me in heaven.”
“No,
please don’t talk like that; you will be alright soon,” I cried with misery.
Meanwhile, the warden rushed into the room and alerted me about the condition
of the patient in the room: 324 on the 3rd floor.
“No, I won't come right now,
leaving him in this situation,” I screamed, “Inform to other doctors.”
There are no one here, Madam and his condition is very serious. He can’t breathe properly,”
warden responded in a deep voice.
“Go
dear! I’m alright now, please go,” he ensured me and took off my hand from his
hand, smiled at me with assuredness.
I warned
the nurse to intimate his condition and went to the third floor to check the
patient in the room: 324. He is Mr.NARASIMHA, Teena’s father, whom I diagnosed
before, his condition is too critical when I entered into the room. He can’t
inhale properly, and he was trying very hard to notch the breath, but it is
getting difficult for him and his pulse rate is falling gradually. This is the
second incident that frightened me on the same night, He needs to survive. I
promised Teena to care for her father.
“Set the mechanical ventilators
to him” I shouted in panic. “His pulse is falling, Give him an antidote
quickly.”
“No! Please don’t worry sir,
stay strong and tolerate this for a few minutes,” I concerned him, “Teena wants
to see you, I promised her... Please sir! Come on.”
Meanwhile, nurses have adjusted the ventilators to him and forced to push
oxygen into his lungs. Finally, he started breathing normally and free, his
pulse is also set to normal, and he is relaxing from his physical stress. Now,
he is out of danger, and I thanked God for saving his life.
Now my
soul settled for a while after facing two panic attacks one after another.
Suddenly
Everything became quiet, the Force breeze rushing into hospital windows, Winds
are howling. The sky started roaring and outside raining heavily, My heart is
sensing some negativity. This scene indicating a bad omen.
“What is
the condition of the patient in room 106?” I questioned the warden in terror.
He
remained silent and simply nodded his head, Through this, I came to know
something is wrong. I rushed to get down through the lift, but it is busy. I
preferred stairs to get down and even skipped some steps to reach down to his
room. When I was about to reach the room: 106, few nurses and wardens were
dumbfounded in-front of his room door. It’s confirmed that this is going to be
the most miserable day of my life. When I entered the room, Dr. Niha averred he
was no more and she tried to save his life, but he is too aged, 60 years plus
and he can't able to withstand this Corona Virus.
After listening to his death news, I lost my consciousness of reality, Felt like I was expatriate from this world, drowning in an ocean of misery, my heart is aching with sorrow. I don’t even have his last word, and we didn't even complete our heart willing conversation. I need to talk to him one last time. My eyes don't even shed a tear after seeing him on the bed resting peacefully, all of my emotions hidden in terrible silence, and I went outside and drenching in the heavy storm for a long time to hold my misery not to shed in raindrops.
CHAPTER-5
PRESS MEET
Days are passing like a flowing river.
Condition is getting improved, and many patients are recovered, reached their
homes safely, and now staying with their families happily as before. Many
doctors like me and some policemen, scavengers, social-workers unitedly worked
to flatter the curve of this affecting Corona Virus. Still, the condition is
bad but not worse than before. Every responsible citizen followed his duty as
staying in their homes in lockdown times to avoid spreading this Corona Virus
and to break the chain of transmission from one person to another.
Teena’s father is completely
alright now, After diagnosing him many days he resulted in negative. So, we
decided to discharge him from the hospital. After hearing this news, Teena felt
so happy and is very eager to see her father and, he also felicitous for being
out of danger. Meanwhile, some numbers made me viral in social media as “IN 39
DAYS DR.RAIZA TOOK CARE OF OVER 149+ COVID PATIENTS.” This news spread so fast everywhere
and tomorrow, the government decided to appreciate my work and efforts in a
video conference press meet. All the hospital staff and my relatives wished me
for this great effort. Hospital management started arranging this conference
meet.
I can't
explain the happiness of Teena and I’m much bonded with her these days. When
her father was in serious condition at that night, I was so terrified thinking
about this child. He is safe now, When I reached home that night, I hugged her
very tightly and wept with grieve. Now, she is so happy and counting the hours
to tomorrow.
“So! I
am going to see my dad tomorrow,” Teena claimed in joy!
“Yes,
dear, Tomorrow you are going to see your Daddy,” I answered, “You can go back
to your home and play with your friends, and soon you will forget this
auntie."
“Whenever
you want to see this aunt, come to me without any hesitation or call me; I will
come to you,” I responded by returning her kiss on her cheek, and she chuckled
louder and we had some childish talk for some time and slept later.
This is
the day, the world wants to appreciate my work for treating COVID-19 patients.
Hospital's honorable members joined in this press meet through video conference
to remark the hospital pride. I’m sitting in the center and my left and right
two seats are occupied by the hospital corespondents and chief doctors masking
their faces. All the government officials and eleven channel reporters are
ready on the other side. Now the press meet is going to start in a few seconds.
Millions of people are watching the telecast in the news channels by sitting in
their houses, and the press meet started with some appreciation words, by the
honorable health minister.
“Dr.
RAZIA BEGUM, Firstly, I congratulate you and thank you for your dedication
towards your work of serving COVID-19 patients. They are safe and able to see
their families again because of you and your restless work. You are so daring
enough to stand in between these affected people, taking your precautions, and
aware of how to survive and fight against Corona Virus. Within 39 days you took
care of 149+ patients means it’s a very big deal. So, This government wants to
appreciate you personally, for your achievement and now you are standing as an
inspiration to many people.., So proud of you RAZIA and God bless you,” praised
me gracefully by the minister.
I
thanked him with an elegant smile in my face for honoring me this respect and
meanwhile, reporters started querying me about some issues.
“Madam,
what is your inspiration for doing this?” queried by one reporter.
“INSPIRATION!!…,”
I claimed, “From childhood onwards, I fond of SERVING PEOPLE IS EQUALS TO
SERVING GOD. Actually, I’m a Muslim and now this is our holy month Ramzan, We
used to pray, fasting all day and worship God. These days are so precious to
us, and we have certain things to follow in this month. But, I strongly believe
God will reflect his grace towards us when we are helping people and serving
the needy than following the religious rituals and customs. Even though in
times of physically and mentally stressed days, I came to the hospital and
served many patients, and Now I am getting appreciations and blessings from so
many people, maybe this God’s reflection and his grace towards my work.”
After
listening to this, everyone applauded, and I felt heartwarming after hearing
those sounds. Few questions raised by some of the journalists and I’m answering
them patiently and suddenly one question by the reporter breaks me out. I was
stubborn for a while, after hearing that impractical question and wondered why
people still think in an imbecile manner and devoid of good sense.
“I’m so
sorry, Mister! I had never been counted on the human lives,” I raged against
him, “I never counted people lives based on the religion, color or caste. I
know this virus has no partiality, like us. It will take away everyone's life
who are affected, irrespective of your religions. Don’t you even know that? How
stupidity is this!”
“Let me
tell you one situation; I faced. I think you're all are familiar with
Nizamuddin issue, Two people are traveling in Nizamuddin express one is Patient
no: 106 and another patient no: 324, both are tested positive in Corona Virus
check-up. The Patient no: 324 is Mr. Narasimha, our former Military officer,
served for our country. He has a 7-year-old daughter, and she tested negative.
But her relatives and all other family members abandoned her. No one came
forward to take care of her when he was getting treatment in our hospital. She
stays in the hospital for the whole night; I took her to my home and take care
of everything,” I chide the reporters in anger.
“I
kindly request all of you through this video conference, Maintain distance with
them, but please don’t abandon the COVID patients and their family members,
make them strong by telling everything will be alright and you are there for
them, aware them about this pandemic disease. Please don’t see them as
dangerous monsters, They also even don’t know before, that they are going to
suffer from this disease,” I concerned, “The patient no: 106 is 60 years old
Muslim man who traveled to Nizamuddin to attend for Tableegh Jamat also tested
positive and admitted in our hospital. One day, I was in a situation that I can
save only one patient among patient:106 and patient: 324. Patient: 106 told me
to go and save his life, and he sacrificed his life to save the man who
protects our lives, fighting in the border,” I cried aloud and my eyes shedding
tears at once.
“The
name of the patient: 106 is MOHAMMED BALEEGH SAIF, and I’m so proud to say that
great man is my father,” I cried in sorrow and my heart breaks out all of a
sudden. I can’t control myself, and all my emotions of my father hidden deep
inside of my heart are flowing out through tears. “If I had concentrated on
him, he would have lived. If I had shown partiality, I would have saved him. If
I had counted numbers on the lives, I would have answered your question,” I
mourned without controlling myself and I brought out my extreme grief inside
me.
This meeting is concluded with deep condolence to my father by our health minister and Next day Mr.Narashima discharged from the hospital and Teena again in his warm hands, They are finally home.
I rode
down to my father's buried place and spend some time in peace, still evening.
We never expected this guest in our lives. Suddenly came and taken away all our
happiness and pushed us in misery, Millions are suffering and this is the story
of one, suffering in that million.
This how
my days are in the pandemic...........
Again proved urself sorry to read it late but i still got it awesome story line impressed with ur words just dont give up keep going And reach ur heights all the best buddy
